5 Hidden Beaches Near Chennai That Are Only Accessible by Car

Chennai is synonymous with Marina Beach. It is the second-longest urban beach in the world, a bustling carnival of merry-go-rounds, food stalls, and crowds. While Marina has its charm, sometimes you just want the ocean to yourself. You crave silence, clean sand, and the rhythmic sound of waves without the noise of city traffic.

Fortunately, the coastline of Tamil Nadu is dotted with pristine, secluded beaches. The catch? Most of them are off the beaten path. They aren’t connected by the local bus network or the suburban train line. To reach these hidden gems, you need your own wheels.

If you are a traveler looking for tranquility, getting a car on rent in Chennai is your ticket to paradise. Driving down the East Coast Road (ECR) with the Bay of Bengal on one side and endless possibilities on the other is an experience in itself. Here are 5 hidden beaches near Chennai that are best explored by car.

1. Pebble Beach (Thiruvanmiyur Extension)

The Quiet Cousin of Bessy

While Elliot’s Beach (Bessy) in Besant Nagar is famous, just a few kilometers south lies a stretch of coast that remains largely untouched. Often called “Pebble Beach” by locals due to the unique texture of the shoreline in certain patches, this area is technically an extension of Thiruvanmiyur.

Why You Need a Car: The access roads here are narrow residential lanes winding through Valmiki Nagar. Autos often refuse to go this deep into the residential zones, or they charge exorbitant return fares. With a car on rent in Chennai, you can navigate these lanes easily and park closer to the shore.

What to Expect: Peace. This is where the locals go for their morning jogs. There are no loud shops or hawkers. It’s just you, the waves, and maybe a few fishermen mending their nets. It is the perfect spot for a sunrise drive.

2. Vada Nemili Beach

The Cleanest Sands on ECR

Located about 40km from the city, Vada Nemili is a small hamlet that most tourists zoom past on their way to Mahabalipuram. They are making a mistake. The beach here is significantly cleaner than the city beaches, and the water is clearer.

Why You Need a Car: Vada Nemili is hidden behind a screen of casuarina groves and private farmhouses. Public buses drop you on the main highway, leaving you with a long, hot walk to the water. A rental car allows you to drive off the highway, navigate the dirt tracks through the groves, and emerge right onto the sands.

What to Do: This is a great spot for a picnic. Since there are no commercial shacks, pack a cooler with sandwiches and cold drinks in the boot of your car. The shallow waters (always exercise caution) make it decent for wading.

3. Sadras Beach (Kalpakkam)

History Meets the Ocean

Drive past Mahabalipuram, about 70km from Chennai, and you will stumble upon Sadras. This isn’t just a beach; it’s a slice of history. Sadras (originally Sadurangapattinam) was a Dutch fortress established in the 17th century.

Why You Need a Car: Sadras is far. A cab from Chennai will cost you a fortune in waiting charges, and buses are infrequent. A self-drive car turns this into a fantastic day trip. You can cruise down the ECR, enjoying the smooth tarmac, and reach Sadras in about 90 minutes.

The Experience: Explore the ruins of the Dutch Fort—you can still see the granaries, the cemetery with old Dutch inscriptions, and the cannons overlooking the sea. The beach adjacent to the fort is wild and beautiful. The contrast of the crumbling brick structures against the blue ocean is a photographer’s dream.

4. Covelong (Kovalam) Point

The Surfer’s Secret

Okay, Kovalam is becoming famous, but the “Point” where the surfers hang out is still a relatively secluded vibe compared to the main beach entrance. This is the birthplace of India’s surfing culture.

Why You Need a Car: Surfing gear is heavy. If you plan to take a lesson or just want to carry a change of clothes, towels, and beach mats, a bike or a bus is impractical. A car on rent in Chennai gives you a “base camp.” You can leave your valuables locked in the car while you hit the waves.

What to Do: Sign up for a 2-hour surf lesson with one of the local surf schools. Even if you don’t surf, watching the pros ride the waves while sipping coconut water is a great way to spend a Saturday. The drive to Kovalam via ECR is scenic, with plenty of pitstops for seafood.

5. Odiyur Lake View Point & Beach

The Dual Water Treat

Located near the Mudaliarkuppam Boat House (approx 90km from Chennai), this spot offers a unique geography: a massive backwater lake on one side of the road and the ocean on the other.

Why You Need a Car: This is pure highway cruising territory. The beauty of this spot is the drive itself. The ECR here is flanked by water on both sides. You cannot experience this freedom in a bus with tinted windows. With a rental car, you can pull over at the causeway, take photos of the migratory birds in the lake, and then drive down to the beach side for the sunset.

What to Expect: Complete isolation. It is one of the few places where you feel truly disconnected from the city. It’s arguably the most romantic drive you can take from Chennai.

Tips for your ECR Road Trip

If you are planning to hire a car on rent in Chennai for this beach hopping adventure, keep these tips in mind:

Toll Booths: The ECR has toll booths. Make sure your rental car has a functioning FASTag to breeze through the lanes.

Sun Safety: These hidden beaches often lack shade (no shacks/umbrellas). Carry plenty of water and sunscreen.

Timing: The best time to leave Chennai is 5:30 AM. You beat the traffic and get to witness the sunrise at your first stop.

Fuel Up: While there are petrol pumps on ECR, they get sparse once you cross Mahabalipuram. Fill up your tank in the city.

Conclusion

Chennai is not just a city of temples and heat; it is a city with a beautiful, breathing coastline waiting to be explored. But to truly unlock these secret doors, you need to step away from the app-based cabs and public transport.

Renting a car gives you the autonomy to turn down a dirt road just to see where it goes. It allows you to stay at the beach until the moon comes up without worrying about the last bus home. So, this weekend, get a car on rent in Chennai, roll down the windows, play your favorite tracks, and go find your own private slice of the Bay of Bengal. The ocean is calling!
