General

To rent a car with GoWheelo in Manali, you must hold a valid Driving License (LMV). At the time of pickup, you are required to submit your original physical Driving License. Additionally, you must provide one other original government ID (Aadhar Card or Voter ID), which is securely held at our hub and returned to you immediately upon the safe return of the car.

No, there is no permit required to drive through the Atal Tunnel to visit Sissu, Keylong, or Jispa. However, all vehicles entering the Lahaul Valley must pay a nominal Green Tax at the Sissu checkpost. This is a massive advantage over the Rohtang Pass route, which requires a strictly capped daily permit.

Rohtang Pass permits are mandatory for sightseeing and are limited to 1,200 vehicles per day (800 Petrol / 400 Diesel). You must apply online at the official HP Rohtang Permit portal. Please note: Tuesdays are Maintenance Days: No vehicles are allowed on Rohtang Pass. Vehicle Age: Cars older than 10 years are not allowed. Special Permit: For self-drive (private plate) cars, only 100 "Special Permits" are issued daily.

Yes, you can drive a GoWheelo car from Manali to Leh. However, due to Ladakh Union Regulations, you cannot use a Manali-registered rental car for local sightseeing in restricted areas like Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, or Hanle. You must park the Manali car in Leh and rent a local Ladakh-registered vehicle for those specific inner-circuit trips.

As of April 1, 2026, the Himachal Pradesh government has revised the entry tax. All private/rental cars entering the state from Chandigarh or Delhi must pay an entry fee of ₹170 (up from ₹70) at the state borders like Parwanoo or Swarghat. This tax is the responsibility of the renter and is not included in the rental price.

Yes! For your safety, GoWheelo only provides legally registered "Rent-A-Cab" vehicles with black license plates and yellow lettering. In Manali, the police frequently check for illegal private white-plate rentals. Driving an illegal rental can lead to vehicle seizure and heavy fines for tourists; our legal fleet ensures a hassle-free holiday.

GoWheelo guarantees a transparent refund process. After you drop off the car at our Manali hub, our team performs a quick inspection for damages and checks for any traffic challans. Once verified, your fully refundable security deposit is processed and returned to your account within 24 to 48 hours.

For the rugged terrains of Spiti or the drive toward the Baralacha La pass, we highly recommend an SUV with high ground clearance (like a Mahindra Thar, Scorpio, or XUV700). While hatchbacks can reach Sissu via the Atal Tunnel, an SUV is essential for any off-road exploration or early-season snow conditions.

Parking is strictly prohibited on Mall Road and the Old Manali narrow lanes. We recommend using the Manali Municipal Corporation Multi-level Parking near the bus stand or the designated parking lots near the Tibetan Monastery. Vehicles parked on the roadside are quickly towed or fined by the Himachal Traffic Police.

Our pickup hubs are conveniently located for travelers. You can pick up your self-drive car near the Manali Private Bus Stand (Siyal), Mall Road (Gompa Road), and Old Manali. We also offer pickup services from the Kullu-Manali Airport (Bhuntar) for a seamless start to your Himalayan road trip.
